DENVER, CO — April 17, 2002 — Patients undergoing dialysis have a significant variation in their cognitive function during the two-day dialysis cycle.

The findings were reported today at the 54th Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Neurology (AAN).

Dialysis patients are subject to significant hemodynamic and metabolic shifts during dialysis, which may increase their risk of experiencing acute cognitive impairment or delirium during or immediately after dialysis. They may also have an increased risk of experiencing chronic cognitive impairment due to the high prevalence of diabetes and hypertension, according to Dr. Anne M. Murray, of the University of Minnesota, in Minneapolis.

The pilot study tested the cognitive function of 23 patients 55 years of age or older who underwent dialysis in an inner city hospital dialysis unit. Subjects were tested at four different time points in their dialysis cycle: 30 minutes before dialysis; one to two hours into the dialysis run; 30 minutes to one hour after dialysis; and in some patients on the day off of dialysis. Fourteen patients completed testing at all four measurement times.
