NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Apr 18 – Parental smoking around the time of conception may increase the likelihood that the resulting child will be female, according to results of a study published in the April 20th issue of The Lancet.
Sperm carrying a Y-chromosome may be more sensitive to changes due to smoking than those carrying an X-chromosome, the authors hypothesize in a press release. Therefore, fertilization with an X-chromosome-carrying sperm is favored, resulting in a lower male-to-female offspring ratio.
