NEW YORK (MedscapeWire) Apr 12 St. John's wort (SJW) reduces blood levels of irinotecan (CPT-11) used in advanced colorectal cancer, according to results of a randomized cross-over trial presented on April 8 at the 93rd annual meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research held in San Francisco, California.
"It's not good enough to stop using St. John's wort just prior to treatment with irinotecan," lead author Ron A. H. J. Mathijssen, MD, from the Rotterdam Cancer Institute in The Netherlands, says in a news release. "We do not know at this time, however, how long patients should stop using St. John's wort before being treated with irinotecan as our study was not long enough to make such a determination."
