Bone loss does not occur at an unusually fast rate after discontinuation of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) nor does bone mineral density (BMD) increase in women who receive HRT beyond three years.
These conclusions were presented by Dr Gail Greendale and colleagues at the University of California at Los Angeles School of Medicine, Los Angeles, United States.
The investigators studied a total of 495 women who had adhered to the assigned treatment in the three-year Postmenopausal Estrogen/Progestin Interventions randomized controlled trial (PEPI-RCT). Participants were observed for an average of three years during and four years after the PEPI-RCT.
