ACC: Chronic Renal Failure a Risk Factor For Post-PCI Adverse Events

ATLANTA, GA — March 18, 2002 — Chronic renal disease is a significant independent risk factor for major adverse cardiac events (MACE) after a percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), investigators said at the 51st Annual Scientific Session of the American College of Cardiology (ACC). In fact, the results indicate that there is a severalfold increase in post- procedural mortality in patients with renal failure.

The data were reported by Dr. Robert Minutello with New York Presbyterian Hospital-Weill Medical College of Cornell University in New York City.

Patients with renal dysfunction often have co-morbidities placing them at greater risk for adverse outcomes following PCI, he noted. It is unclear whether renal dysfunction itself is an independent predictor for adverse events post- PCI.

Interventional cardiologists in the state of New York are required to provide the state with detailed information of every PCI attempted. This database contains information regarding peri-procedural medications, clinical and angiographic risk factors, coronary anatomy, and major in-hospital events.
