Family History, Obesity Boost Pediatric Asthma Risk

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Mar 19 – Obesity and a parental history of asthma are among major risk factors for development of the condition, according to a study of more than 12,000 youngsters.
Dr. Michael A. Rodriguez, of the University of California, Los Angeles, and colleagues, sought to characterize population subgroups that might be at high risk of asthma. The researchers examined data on a nationally representative sample of 12,388 children aged 2 months through 16 years.

As reported in the March issue of the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, the overall prevalence of current asthma was 6.7%. Children with a parental history of asthma or hay fever were at a four times greater risk (odds ratio 4.0), and those with a body mass index (BMI) in the 85th percentile or more had almost double the risk (OR 1.94). The odds ratio was increased to 1.64 for children of African American ethnicity.

The highest risk subgroup was of children with a family history of asthma or hay fever who were ten years old or older and were at or beyond the 85th percentile for BMI. These children had a 31% prevalence of current asthma.
