WESTPORT, CT (Reuters Health) – Symptoms of depression appear to peak in men during their 50s, but in women there is typically no increase in symptoms with age until about age 65, according to data from a longitudinal study presented Thursday at the Gerontological Society of America meeting in Chicago.
"These findings highlight the complexity in the relationship between age and depression," Dr. Richard N. Jones of the Hebrew Rehabilitation Center for Aged Research and Training Institute in Boston told Reuters Health.
Dr. Jones analyzed interview responses from 12,652 adults participating in the national Health and Retirement Survey. The subjects, who were 23 to 85 years old at the time of first interview, responded to three sets of questions from the Centers for Epidemiologic Studies Depression scale. Interviews were conducted at 2-year intervals, Dr. Jones said.
The first set of questions rated depressive symptoms on a 4-point scale, while the second and third involved yes/no questions. Dr. Jones noted that there was "no easy way to combine these data," so he developed the Item Response Theory as an "equating algorithm" to put the different types of response data on the same scale.
The combined interview data from 5867 male respondents revealed that depressive symptoms peak in the fifties and again beyond age 65," Dr. Jones said.
In responses from 6785 interviews with women, Dr. Jones said, he found "no apparent relationship between depressive symptoms and age in women between the ages of 40 and 65, but there seems to be an increased association beyond age 65."
Dr. Jones plans additional research to further evaluate his algorithm, which he hopes to make available to other epidemiologists.
