Blood pressure reduced when dietary protein, fiber increased

WESTPORT, CT (Reuters Health) – Increasing dietary fiber and protein significantly reduces ambulatory blood pressure in patients being medically treated for hypertension, according to results of a study conducted in Australia.

During a 4-week "familiarization period," 41 subjects at least 20 years old and receiving no more than two antihypertensive agents were given a diet that provided 12.5% of energy from protein and 15 g fiber per day. Dr. Valerie Burke from the University of Western Australia in Perth and colleagues randomly assigned the subjects to continue the low-protein, low-fiber diet, or to diets in which soy protein or psyllium or both supplements were added.

As reported in Hypertension for October, nine subjects in each group completed the 8-week trial. Protein was supplemented with 66 grams of soy per day, to provide a total of 25% energy as protein. Additional psyllium resulted in an additional 12 grams of soluble fiber per day.

The subjects who consume the high-fiber, high-protein diet experienced the greatest decreases in blood pressure, with 24-hour mean systolic blood pressure dropping by 10.5 mm Hg relative to control subjects. The Australian researchers documented "significant independent effects of fiber and protein on 24-hour systolic blood pressure and awake systolic blood pressure and a significant effect of protein on asleep systolic blood pressure."

"Adequate intake of protein and fiber, particularly with fruits and vegetables as sources of soluble fiber, should be considered in recommendations of an optimal diet for reduction of cardiovascular risk in subjects with normal renal function," Dr. Burke and her team conclude.
