Collagen implant an alternative to surgery for stress incontinence

WESTPORT, CT (Reuters Health) – Treatment with Contigen collagen implant cures or improves symptoms in most women with stress incontinence and urethral hypermobility, according to researchers in the United States.

The approach appears to be an effective alternative to surgery for women "in whom surgery is ill advised due to advanced age, severe medical illness or possible additional pregnancies," Dr. A. E. Bent, of the Greater Baltimore Medical Center, Maryland, and a multicenter team propose in the October issue of The Journal of Urology.

The investigators examined the benefits of the collagen implant in 90 women with stress urinary incontinence and urethral hypermobility. The women received one to three injections over 6 months and were followed for 6 additional months after the final injection.

Of the 68 patients who reached the 6-month followup, 30 (44%) were dry and 24 (35%) were improved. Of the 58 patients who completed the 12-month followup, 19 (33%) were dry and 19 (33%) were improved.

Dr. Bent's group concludes that "there has been enough success in patients with stress incontinence and urethral hypermobility to recommend collagen injection in those who wish to avoid the risks or recovery time associated with surgery" and those for whom surgery is not an acceptable option.
