ISLAMABAD (Reuters) – Afghanistan's ruling Taliban movement sealed communication equipment of a humanitarian aid agency, the International Organisation for Migration, in the country's northerly Kunduz province on Friday, a United Nations spokeswoman said.

"Today the Taliban authorities sealed off the communication equipment held by the International Organisation for Migration in Kunduz," Stephanie Bunker told reporters.

The International Organization for Migration, which is associated with the UN and is setting up camps in Kunduz for victims of drought and conflict, is now reaching the outside world via a satellite telephone in the Kunduz bazaar in the presence of Taliban officials.

The Taliban is threatened with US military reprisals for sheltering Saudi-born dissident Osama bin Laden, who is suspected of masterminding the September 11 attacks on the US. It locked up UN communications equipment in Kabul last month.

The UN has asked the Taliban authorities, who have also taken over aid offices in the southern city of Kandahar, to let it use at least one high-frequency radio to keep communications open.

"There has still been no Taliban response," Bunker said.

UN offices in Afghanistan are currently manned by local staff after the world body pulled out foreign staff following the September 11 attacks.
