Fat, fiber and alcohol linked to HIV-associated fat redistribution

WESTPORT, CT (Reuters Health) – Dietary levels of fiber, alcohol and polyunsaturated fat may influence the risk of fat redistribution in HIV-infected patients, according to research results published in the September 1st issue of Clinical Infectious Diseases.

The new data "indicate a number of potential targets for dietary modification among patients with HIV infection and fat redistribution," lead author Dr. Colleen Hadigan, of Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, and a multicenter team say in the report.

Dr. Hadigan and colleagues examined the associations between dietary characteristics, body composition and metabolic parameters in 85 men and women with HIV infection and fat redistribution.

They found that the polyunsaturated-to-saturated fat ratio was positively associated with insulin exposure (area under the curve), while dietary fiber intake was inversely associated with insulin exposure. Another dietary factor, alcohol intake, was positively associated with low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels. These associations were independent of patient age, sex, body fat distribution and duration of protease inhibitor use.

"Significant metabolic disturbances, such as hyperinsulinemia, dyslipidemia and impaired glucose tolerance, have been identified" in patients with HIV infection and fat redistribution, the authors note. "Our data indicate that certain modifiable dietary components, such as polyunsaturated fats, fiber, and alcohol, are strongly associated with insulin resistance and hyperlipidemia among these patients."
