Defects in Natural Killer T Cells Not Associated With Type 1 Diabetes

Contrary to previous findings in animal models, results of a new study indicate that natural killer T lymphocytes (NKT) defects do not appear to be involved in the pathogenesis of type 1 diabetes.

 Dr. Albert Bendelac from the University of Chicago, and colleagues note that earlier research has suggested that NKT cells might have a general role in suppressing autoimmune reactions. While it has been inferred from mouse models of insulin-dependent diabetes that defects in NKT cells are involved, the function and identity of NKT cells was established only through indirect methods, the researchers note.
