Growth hormone deficiency impairs diastolic function but spares systolic function in adults with hypopituitarism. This might indicate a preclinical stage of a cardiomyopathy, say researchers at the Istanbul Faculty of Medicine, Turkey.
The investigators evaluated cardiac performance and body composition in patients with adult onset growth hormone deficiency. The study group consisted of 19 growth hormone-deficient adult hypopituitary patients with at least three additional pituitary hormone deficits and 19 healthy controls matched by age, sex and body mass index.
Among the hypopituitary patients, the mean duration of their condition was approximately nine years. None of the patients or controls had ever been diagnosed with a disease that might affect cardiac function.
