An increased transvascular transport of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) in patients with type 2 diabetes may contribute to their high risk of atherosclerotic vascular disease, according to a report in the July issue of Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology.
Transcapillary transport of albumin is elevated in patients with diabetes and in patients with severe atherosclerosis, the authors explain, but it is not known whether LDL transport across vascular walls is similarly increased in such patients. Such a possibility might increase intimal lipoprotein accumulation.
