– A French court ordered two medical associations on Tuesday to pay damages to the family of a woman who died from variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (vCJD) after receiving growth hormone therapy. Pascale Fachin died of vCJD at the age of 30 years in June last year.
She had received six months of hormone treatment to correct her height in 1985, a time when American laboratories had stopped providing such medication because of contamination risks.
Her family argued at the court in the southern city of Montpellier that the Pasteur Institute and the now-defunct France-Hypophysis association had provided the woman with defective products.
