Most newly diagnosed children with type-1 diabetes have enterovirus RNA in their blood cells, suggesting that viral infection may contribute to the development of diabetes, according to a report in the June issue of Diabetes.
Geographical and epidemiological evidence suggests that environmental factors play a major role in the etiology of type-1 diabetes in children, the authors explain. Enterovirus infection has long been posited as a component in the development of diabetes.
