There is little current evidence that metal allergies may be associated with in-stent restenosis in patients with coronary stents, but it cannot be excluded, say German researchers. Data were collected on 34 patients and analysed at the Departments of Dermatology and Cardiology, University of Essen, Essen, Germany.
The hypothesis was that one of the triggering factors in in-stent restenosis was a delayed hypersensitivity reaction to nickel and molybdenum. The standard series of the German Contact Dermatitis Research Group was used to perform patch tests on the 24 male and 10 female subjects.A metal series containing the metal components of 316 L stainless steel was also used. Four of the patients, 11.8%, were found to have positive patch test reaction to nickel. No sensitisation to the other metals was seen.
