Apoptosis is involved in tumour cell death after photodynamic therapy in patients with actinic keratoses. Dr. H. Nakaseko and colleagues from the department of dermatology at Aichi Medical University, Nagakute, Aichi, Japan, collected 18 biopsy specimens from 15 patients with actinic keratoses who received topical 5-aminolaevulinic acid photodynamic therapy.
One hour after photodynamic therapy, the researchers observed cells with eosinophilic cytoplasm and strongly stained nuclei. In the lower layer of the epidermis they found vacuolation of some tumour cells. In the upper layer of the dermis there was an infiltrate of lymphocytes and neutrophils.
