Sentinel lymph node (SLN) mapping and biopsy is as safe and reliable for regional staging of head and neck cutaneous melanoma as for other sites, according to physicians at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.
Although now routinely conducted for melanoma of the trunk and extremities, use of the technology’s in the head and neck area has often been precluded by the complexity of the lymphatic system and concern about potential damage to vital structures. But “we now know it can be done, and done safely,” Dr. Carol R. Bradford notes in a university statement.
