Patients diagnosed with cutaneous melanoma are known to be at increased risk of developing a second primary cutaneous melanoma. Now, two cancer researchers report they have identified several risk factors for a second melanoma among melanoma survivors. They are male gender, time since diagnosis, and first melanoma on the face, neck or trunk.
“There have been several smaller series looking at the second melanomas from single institutions, but never risk factors for a second melanoma on a national level,” Dr. Hensin Tsao from Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston told Reuters Health.
