Editor’s Note: How do doctors feel about direct-to-consumer (DTC) advertising for prescription drugs? According to preliminary results of a physician survey, some think that the ads are beneficial because they educate patients and involve them in their own healthcare. But some physicians feel pressured to prescribe specific brand drugs requested by patients, even if the less expensive generics would work equally well, or even if another drug or no drug therapy at all would be more appropriate.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released a Talk Paper on Jan. 13 summarizing the results of its survey of 500 physicians, of whom 40% said DTC advertising had a somewhat or very positive impact on their practices and patients, while 42% said the effect was somewhat or very negative.
