The ability of melanoma to mimic seborrhoeic keratosis has been confirmed in a study, underlining the need to submit for histological examination all specimens that have been removed from patients.
This finding results from a study by Leonid Izikson, a third year medical student at Harvard, and doctors from the hospital’s Dermatopathology Unit and Departments of Dermatology and Pathology from Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, Boston, Massachusetts, United States.
The objective of the study was to estimate prevalence of melanoma clinically mimicking seborrhoeic keratosis. The researchers retrospectively reviewed 9,204 consecutive cases submitted between 1992 and 2001 for histological examination with either a clinical diagnosis of seborrhoeic keratosis or a differential diagnosis that included it.
