Melasma can be effectively treated with 4% hydroquinone and a daily sunscreen. However, addition of glycolic peels does not enhance the hypopigmenting effect of hydroquinone alone, say American researchers.
They noted that the acquired hypermelanosis has often proved resistant to hypopigmenting therapeutic agents. Consequently, Dr Mary E. Hurley and colleagues at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Centre in Dallas, assessed the efficacy of hydroquinone cream 4% versus combined hydroquinone cream 4% and glycolic acid peels for melasma. Twenty one Hispanic women with bilateral epidermal and mixed melasma participated in an eight-week split- faced prospective trial.
The process included using 20-30% glycolic acid peels every two weeks on one side of the face. In addition, the patients were given a full -faced application of hydroquinone cream 4% twice-daily, and a sun protective factor 25 ultraviolet-B sunscreen each morning.
