The activation of mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) is an early event in the progression of melanoma, according to a report in the December 2002 issue of Clinical Cancer Research.
MAPK may thus represent a therapeutic target. Although melanoma is a classic example of tumor progression, the authors explain, the alterations in signal transduction accompanying the transition from the atypical nevus precursor to radial growth melanoma are poorly understood.
