There appears to be a correlation between procalcitonin levels and both severity and outcome of systemic fungal infection.
Procalcitonin (PCT) is a marker of inflammation, which is significantly increased in patients with severe systemic bacterial infection or sepsis. Microbiologists at Laikon General Hospital, University of Athens, in Athens, Greece, undertook an evaluation of its role in systemic mycosis.
They investigated 14 patients with a mean age of 40 years and either confirmed or probable systemic fungal infections. They collected blood samples on days 1, 3, 5 and 10 after the signs and symptoms of infection were identified through clinical laboratory diagnosis or radiographic evidence.
Procalcitonin levels were measured using immunoluminometric assay. On day 3, five patients with severe fungal infection and an unfavourable course had moderately elevated PCT levels (0.5-1.0 ng/mL) compared to normal levels in patients who recovered.
