Opioid Peptides Don’t Mediate Psychological Benefits of Ultraviolet Radiation Exposure

Increased levels of beta-endorphin and met-enkephalin are unlikely to mediate the psychological benefits associated with exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation or sunlight. Researchers from Ruhr-University Bochum, Germany, measured levels of beta-endorphin immunoreactive material and met-enkephalin in plasma taken from 35 healthy volunteers exposed to UV radiation as well as nine non-exposed controls.

 The researchers measured levels of beta-endorphin immunoreactive material and met-enkephalin at baseline, 20 minutes after exposure to UVA delivered using a tanning device and after five further UVA exposures over three weeks. The final measurements were taken 24 hours after the last UV session.
