The election of a new director-general for the World Health Organisation next month will affect the health of millions worldwide but the process is shrouded in unacceptable secrecy, according to medical journal editors who want the system to be more transparent.
National governments have nominated nine candidates to replace the incumbent, Dr. Gro Harlem Brundtland, who unexpectedly announced this year that she was stepping down. Responsibility for selecting a new leader from the list lies with the WHO executive board–a group of 32 health ministers and government officials who will meet behind closed doors in late January.
