Patients with celiac disease (CD) or dermatitis herpetiforms (DH) have an overall cancer risk that is only slightly higher than that of people without these conditions, according to a recent report. Furthermore, after 10 years following the initial hospitalization for CD or DH, the increased cancer risk disappeared.
However, CD is associated with a relatively high risk for certain malignancies, such as lymphomas. Still, the 6-fold increased risk of lymphomas identified in the current study is much lower than the risks reported in previous studies, which have ranged from a 15- to 100-fold increase.
