British scientists have developed a method of measuring blood flow in human body tissue without the need for surface contact, which they say could have wide-reaching clinical application.
The researchers, from Loughborough University, say the technique could be used to check regional blood volume in patients where skin contact is not desirable. However, they stressed that the work is at an early stage and more development is needed before it can be used in routine medical practice. “It’s at an embryonic stage and we want to improve the sensitivity and reliability of the method,” research associate Vincent Crabtree told Reuters Health. “But hopefully it can be used where existing equipment cannot. For example, with burns victims you don’t want to resting probes on the skin, so we may be able to use this to monitor blood volume in the burnt areas.”
