Predictive risk factors for extensive subclinical spread have been identified in nonmelanoma skin cancer.
Basosqamous and morpheaform basal cell carcinoma on the nose, morpheaform basal cell carcinoma on the cheek and tumours with a preoperative size larger than 25 millimeters present the greatest risk with odds ratios greater than 6.0.
Recurrent and nodular basal cell carcinoma on the nose is also an important risk factor for extensive subclinical spread, as is tumour location on the eyelid, temple or ear helix. Neck tumours and recurrent basal cell carcinoma in men and tumours larger than 10 millimeters are also important predictors of extensive subclinical spread.
