Researchers Call for Exercise Programs to Help Breathing of Badly Burned Children

Exercise programs should become a fundamental component of the outpatient treatment of severely burned children, researchers recommend.

An exercise program can improve the pulmonary function of children with 40 percent or more of their body surface area covered in burns, according to findings by researchers from the University of Texas, in Galveston, Texas, United States.

Exercise has previously been used to improve pulmonary function in other groups with breathing problems, such as those with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, the researchers write. But the effects of exercise on respiratory function in burned children is not known. They compared 31 severely burnt children aged 7-17 with 20 healthy controls. The burned children were randomised into two groups: one was assigned to a 12-week in-hospital physical rehabilitation program with a supplementary exercise-training program; the second group was assigned standard home-based rehabilitation without exercise.
