Biologic therapies provide safe and effective systemic treatment for psoriasis sufferers, according to presentations at the American Academy of Dermatology’s (AAD) Academy 2002 in New York.
Available agents such as etanercept and infliximab target pro-inflammatory cytokines, while agents not yet available alefacept and efaluzimab interfere with T-cell activation. “Psoriasis is chronic and unpredictable, but these new treatments offer a greater chance of remission with less side-effects something that is very important to individuals with psoriasis who need a long-term treatment to fit their lifestyle,” dermatologist Mark Lebwohl, MD, says in a news release.
Psoriasis is the most prevalent T-cell mediated inflammatory disease in humans. It is estimated that more than 7 million Americans have psoriasis, with more than 150,000 cases reported each year. “Etanercept has been shown to be dramatically effective for psoriatic arthritis and recently has been shown to improve psoriasis as well,” says Lebwohl. “Patients administer etanercept by injections at home, and that makes it convenient for them because they don’t need to go to a doctor’s office for each treatment.” Lebwohl presented at the AAD Academy 2002 on Aug. 3.
