Inhaled Budesonide Can Induce Skin Reaction in Patients With Contact Allergy

Patients with a contact allergy to budesonide may experience allergic skin reactions when using inhaled forms of the drug, according to a report published in the June issue of the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology.

 Based on these findings, the researchers conclude that asthmatics with a contact allergy to budesonide probably should not receive the steroid as an inhalant. Up to 5% of dermatitis patients demonstrate an allergy to one or more corticosteroids when patch tested.

However, relatively few studies have addressed the effects that inhaled corticosteroids have on skin symptoms in such patients. Dr. Marl ne Isaksson and colleagues, from Malm University in Sweden, assessed the skin-related outcomes of 15 patients with a contact allergy to budesonide who were randomized to challenge with inhaled budesonide or placebo.
