Topical Clindamycin Plus Benzoyl Peroxide Fights Acne

July 3, 2002 — The combination of topical clindamycin with benzoyl peroxide is more effective than clindamycin alone at reducing Propionibacterium acnes bacterial counts, according to results of a randomized, open-label trial reported in the June issue of Cutis. Other studies link reduction in counts to better clinical outcomes and indicate that the combination results in fewer resistant bacterial strains.

“The combination therapy produces rapid and clinically relevant reductions in the bacteria P. acnes that are significantly greater than those produced by single agent therapy,” author James J. Leyden, MD, from the University of Pennsylvania, says in a news release.

During a two-week period of twice-daily treatment, this study compared the onset of action and reduction of P. acnes by three topical preparations: a combination acne product (BenzaClin) containing clindamycin 1% and benzoyl peroxide 5% gel; clindamycin solution; and vehicle gel. In 60 healthy volunteers who were free of acne but who had high levels of facial P. acnes, the combination therapy significantly reduced P. acnes by 90% within 24 hours of application, and by 99.9% at the end of the two-week study period (P<.001).
