Phototherapy With 308-Nm Excimer Laser Effective Treatment For Vitiligo

Targeted phototherapy of vitiligo using a single-wavelength laser produces a degree of repigmentation that “is much higher than with any other vitiligo therapy,” according to a report in the May issue of the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology.

Dr. James M. Spencer and colleagues from Mount Sinai School of Medicine, in New York, examined the effectiveness of a 308-nm xenon-chloride excimer laser for the treatment of patients with vitiligo. Twenty-nine patches of vitiligo in 18 patients were treated three times a week for up to 4 weeks.

Untreated vitiligo patches served as control sites. The researchers report that 23 patches in 12 patients received at least six treatments. Of these, partial repigmentation was seen in 13 (57%). They observed no repigmentation in any of the control patches of vitiligo.
