Reversible Adrenal Suppression A Rare Potential Effect of Topical Steroid Use

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Jun 20 –

 Topical corticosteroid use is associated with a risk of adrenal insufficiency due to suppression of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. However, no cases of irreversible adrenal suppression have been reported in the literature, according to investigators at the University of California at San Francisco Medical Center.

 By reviewing literature as far back as 1969, Drs. Cheryl Levin and Howard I. Maibach found that even low potency corticosteroids can cause cutaneous atrophy, rosacea and adrenal suppression. Only one death has been attributed to the use of topical steroid use. The highest potency steroids, especially those that are fluorinated, are more likely to cause difficulty.
