Patch Test Use Increases Among Dermatologists In US

The use of patch tests, the standard for diagnosing delayed hypersensitivity reactions of the skin, is rising in the United States.

 When researchers from the University of Minnesota and the Minneapolis Veterans Affairs Medical Centre surveyed one-third of the Fellows of the American Academy of   Dermatology in 1997, they found 83 percent of them had used patch tests in their practices.

Investigators report this is a significant increase over use among dermatologists surveyed in

1990. Most dermatologists (52 percent) used a 48-hour, 96-hour patch test reading schedule; 26 percent performed a single reading at 48 hours or 72 hours. Most (74 percent) of those who patch-tested said they used the TRUE Test. Many (44 percent) suggested they did so because it was less time consuming for staff.
