Patients with thin melanomas demonstrating extensive spontaneous regression are at increased risk for the development of metastases, according to a recent report.
Dr. Joan Guitart, from Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago, and colleagues note that while melanomas less than 1 mm thick generally have a good prognosis, thin tumors can metastasize. They therefore analyzed thin melanomas from 43 patients with metastases and 42 patients without metastases to determine the histologic characteristics predictive of tumor spread
