Acral erythema may be associated with malignant tumours, and the intensity of the erythema may be related to vascular changes in the tumours.
It is likely these links are due to angiogenic factors, according to researchers at Hôpital Pitié-Salpêtrière, Paris, France.
While acral erythema on the palms can be seen in several conditions, there have been few reports about its relationship with malignant tumours. Since tumours produce angiogenic mediators which might promote palmar erythema (PE), the researchers sought to measure vasodilation of palmar skin capillaries and angiogenesis in patients with tumours of the central nervous system.
PE was assessed clinically and the rate of dilated vessels histologically in this prospective study of 107 patients affected by brain tumours.
The mean surface of the lumen of capillaries was evaluated on skin biopsies and brain tumours.
