ThinPrep® Sufficient Preparation Method In Diagnosis Of Melanoma Fine-Needle Aspirates

 While there is good correlation in the evaluation of melanoma between the cytological features of ThinPrep® (TP) and conventional smears (CS) for fine-needle aspirates (FNAs), cytologic alterations are introduced by TP.

 Clinicians should be aware of this when they carry out TP which, otherwise, is an adequate preparation method in the diagnosis of melanoma FNAs, say physicians in the departments of pathology and urology and the Comprehensive Cancer Center, University of Michigan, United States.

They suggest that since TP is inclined to reduce background blood and concentrate the cells, it can be a useful adjunct in bloody or low cellular aspirates. Of 51 aspirates diagnosed as melanoma in this study, 36 were prepared by both TP and CS and evaluated for cellularity, cell aggregates, cellular appearance, melanin pigment, cytoplasmic and nuclear features.
