Melanoma Prognosis Not Influenced By Type Of Biopsy

05/21/2002 By James Adams

Melanoma prognosis is similar following either incisional biopsy before definitive excision or excisional biopsy.

It is often useful to have a definitive diagnosis of melanoma before a patient undergoes surgery, but previous studies have not clearly addressed any effects of incisional biopsy on melanoma prognosis, according to investigators from the Scottish Melanoma Group.

The investigators, from the Department of Dermatology at Western Infirmary in Glasgow and The Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh in Edinburgh, Scotland, conducted a retrospective case control study of patients from the Scottish Melanoma Group database.

This database was established in 1979 and collects clinical, pathologic, and follow-up data on all patients diagnosed with melanoma in Scotland.

Two hundred sixty-five patients who had incisional biopsy before definitive excision of melanoma were matched for age, sex, sites and Breslow thickness with 496 cases who had excisional biopsies. Times to recurrence and melanoma-related death following initial biopsy were assessed.
