NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Mar 27 – In Caucasian populations, the melanin density in the upper inner arm is inversely related to risk of melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma, according to a recent report. Such densities can be measured noninvasively with spectrophotometry at the skin's surface.
Dr. Terence Dwyer, from the University of Tasmania in Australia, and colleagues compared the upper arm melanin densities of more than 600 patients with various skin cancers with those of 483 control subjects. The subjects were 20 to 59 years of age and were all of northern European ancestry.
