Eradication of H. pylori may improve symptoms of hereditary skin disorder

מתוך medicontext.co.il

LONDON (Reuters Health) – Helicobacter pylori infection is thought to play a causative role in many dermatologic conditions. In the November 17th issue of The Lancet, researchers report that H. pylori eradication reduces the frequency of oedematous episodes associated with hereditary angioneurotic oedema (HAO).

Dr. Henriette Farkas, from Semmelweis University in Budapest, Hungary, and colleagues assessed the prevalence of H. pylori infection in 65 patients with HAO. Infected patients were treated with a 1-week course of amoxicillin, clarithromycin, and omeprazole.

The researchers identified 19 patients who were infected with H. pylori. All of the infected patients and 11 of the noninfected patients reported prior episodes of acute abdominal pain.

With the exception of one patient who was not compliant with therapy, H. pylori was successfully eradicated in all infected patients, the authors note. Detailed analysis of data from nine patients revealed that the frequency of oedematous episodes over a 10-month period decreased from 100 before eradication to 19 after eradication.

"Elimination of potential triggering factors is the cornerstone of treatment for HAO," the investigators state. "Screening for H. pylori infection and eradication of the pathogen seems justified in patients with HAO."
