Patients with type 1 diabetes may show signs of coronary artery disease as early as their teens, especially if they smoke or have high levels of lipoprotein(a), US researchers report.
These findings serve as a reminder to monitor type 1 diabetics closely, and to counsel them about risk factors for heart disease at an early age, study author Dr. Harold S. Starkman, from Morristown Memorial Hospital in New Jersey, told Reuters Health.
