Exposure to low concentrations of carbon monoxide may prevent the intimal hyperplasia that results from vascular injury sustained from angioplasty or chronic graft rejection, according to a report in the January 21st advance online issue of Nature Medicine.
The enzyme heme oxygenase-1, which catabolizes heme into products that include carbon monoxide (CO), is expressed after vascular injury, the authors explain, and CO can act as an anti-inflammatory and anti-apoptotic agent.
