Medicare Services Gaining Ground

The medical services rendered under Medicare during 2000-2001 improved compared with 1998-1999, but there is plenty of room for more improvement. That is the central message of a study released in the Jan. 15 issue of The Journal of the American Medical Association. The study concentrated on 22 indicators that have previously been shown to help prevent or treat breast cancer, diabetes, myocardial infarction (MI), heart failure, pneumonia, and stroke.

The indicators include such measures as administration of aspirin within 24 hours of admission for an MI, recommendation of a mammogram at least once every two years for women aged 52 to 89 years, and an eye examination at least every two years for diabetic patients. The authors, led by Stephen F. Jencks, MD, MPH, of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, found that the nation’s healthcare facilities had improved in 20 of the 22 indicators.
