Murine studies indicate that simvastatin helps stabilize atherosclerotic plaques independently of its lipid lowering properties, researchers report in the November issue of Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology.
As senior investigator Dr. Michael E. Rosenfeld told Reuters Health, “simvastatin treatment increased plasma cholesterol in the apolipoprotein E-deficient mice and this led to an increase in plaque size. Nevertheless, there were accompanying changes in plaque composition that made them less likely to rupture.”
