Sildenafil Improves Endothelial Function In Coronary Artery Patients


The phosphodiesterase 5 inhibitor, sildenafil dilates epicardial coronary arteries, improves endothelial dysfunction and inhibits platelet activation in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD), United States researchers report.

Investigators from the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland and Washington Hospital Centre in Washington, DC, studied the effects of the drug on coronary and peripheral vascular function, platelet activation and myocardial ischaemia.

They measured its effects on resting coronary vascular tone, endothelium-dependent and -independent function and platelet activation in 24 patients. They also assessed flow-mediated dilation of the brachial artery.
