In external cardioversion for atrial fibrillation (AF), anterior-posterior placement of the electrodes is more effective than anterior-lateral placement, German researchers report in the October 26th issue of The Lancet.
Dr. Paulus Kirchhof from the University of Munster, and colleagues randomly assigned 108 consecutive patients with persistent AF undergoing cardioversion to anterior-lateral or anterior-posterior electrode placement.
Patients who did not achieve sinus rhythm with a single 360 J shock received a crossover shock of 360 J with the electrodes in the other configuration, the researchers note
