Echocardiographic/Doppler Index Predicts Outcome In Heart Failure

The Tei index in patients with symptomatic heart failure and severe left ventricular (LV) systolic dysfunction is a powerful independent predictor of poor clinical outcome.

 This was the finding of Dr. K.J. Harjai and colleagues at the Department of Cardiology, Ochsner Medical Institutions, New Orleans, Louisiana, United States. These investigators studied 105 randomly selected patients with LV ejection fraction less than 30 percent and at least one hospitalization for heart failure.

 Among these 105 patients there were 60 in whom assessment of the Tei index was technically possible. The Tei index is an echocardiographic/Doppler index of combined systolic and diastolic function. It is the isovolumic relaxation time plus isovolumic contraction time divided by ejection time.
